Interview with Red Bull Thre3 Style Atlanta Champion DJ EU! #KeEsLaKe

EU Boombox
We caught up with 2013′s Red Bull Thre3Style  Atlanta champion, DJ EU, to get a little insight on this year’s goals, what makes him stand out from the rest, and also a tiny look inside of some of the crazy things DJs do to get the crowd moving, check it out!

Q: Aside from winning, what was your favorite part from last year’s Thre3Style competition?
A: Meeting so many great DJs during and after the battle.

Q: Is there anything you plan on doing differently this year?
A: I plan on making it to the Finals.

Q: What advice would you give this year’s participating DJs?
A: Make sure your set reflects your style as a DJ & be unique.

Q: Do you have a favorite track that you like to keep in your back pocket to get the crowd going?
A: I have this routine that brings the latin element into my routine. Love doing it, it brings flavor into my set. Shhhh!

Q: Do you drink while you spin? If so, what is your beverage of choice?
A: I try not to drink while I’m DJ’ing, but if I do it’s usually Vodka RedBull or Beer. Also water, very important to hydrate.

Q: How do you feel about people in the DJ booth? Posse or no posse?
A: I don’t mind it as long as they don’t hit, spill, or push anything regarding the DJ’s set up or the light guy.

Q: What’s your craziest DJ booth story?
A: A girl bought a champagne bottle and sprayed it toward me. Got on the turntables and a little on my laptop. Music kept playing.

Q: What made you want to get back into the Red Bull 3Style?
A: I want to defend the title & also make it further into the competition this year. I also want to put Atlanta on the map. Not so much in the Hip-Hop aspect that it is already recognized for. I want to be that “Atlanta DJ” that has residencies in Vegas.

Q: Would you rather play YMCA or The Electric Slide? Your life depends on it, you have to choose.
A: YMCA but why not the Macarena?

Q: What is the most you’ve been paid to play a song? And do you remember what song it was?
A: Between $100 – $200. One was Justin Bieber’s – Baby & Nas – Hate Me Now.

Red Bull Soapbox Race

This past Saturday was a milestone for the FIT Radio team to say the least. Not only was it our first time attending the Red Bull Soapbox Race but also our first time competing.

vs.

Clearly from day one we knew that we were a bunch of amateur misfits in a sea of professional enthusiasts but we didn’t let that slow us down. The amount of dedication and time and effort that these teams sacrificed is nothing short of incredible and we knew it was going to take some serious man power to get us up to speed with the R.B.S.B. (Red Bull Soapbox) veterans. With only two more days before the race, hurdle after hurdle, deadline crunch after deadline crunch we found ourselves among the chosen teams to be featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution!

There is just something about being featured in your hometown’s news paper that fills you with a certain kind of pride (insert blissful moment of silence with weird cheesy smile included.) Anyway back to reality, when Friday came (day before the race) there was no looking back especially since Lexi and I had to push Rusty from Opera Nightclub to Piedmont Park and we literally couldn’t look back because we had to make sure we didn’t push the President of FIT Radio into on coming traffic . No worries, we found time for a photo opp!

After what seemed like an hour we made it to our destination and dropped off our “little” baby into the trusty hands of the Red Bull officials. I could tell it was going to be hard getting any sleep that night. Picture yourself waking up in a panic thinking you’re an hour late for a huge meeting every hour on the hour…yeah not the best nights sleep I’d ever had. Anyway, we got to our pit and this is what one of our competitors looked like:

Yeah, giant Christian Louboutin pumps. Our craft might have not had as much paper mache detail as the others but our sound system made up for it

Around 11:45 am the teams began to get in line to make their way down the course (which didn’t seem as intimidating as we thought unfortunately). While Rusty and the rest of the skit members waited anxiously in line, Lexi and I tried to find a good post to see all the action. Easier said than done. The park was packed and not only was it hot and muggy outside but the amount of people there made me have flashbacks of Music Midtown and getting stuck to sweaty people who couldn’t navigate a crowd if their life depended on it! Sorry, clearly I’m still a little bent out of shape about it. No worries though,we found an awesome spot and were able to see the skit and watch it all on the big screen behind the stage. If my memory serves me correctly the judges gave us some pretty solid scores. We received a 10, 9, 8, 10, 9, 10, 8. But there is a very good chance I could be wrong.

After our car’s run down the hill, we frantically fought our  way through the crowd to meet up with everyone. In case you aren’t aware of the rules, there is absolutely no consumption of alcohol before the race by any of the team members, so you can imagine our excitement when we reached Park Tavern.

After we had a few, okay many celebratory cocktails somebody remembered that we had to retrieve the FIT Radio Soapbox car and take it home, aka all the way back to Rusty’s place near Crescent Avenue (barf). Luckily for me, I couldn’t help push because somebody had to document everything via camera phone!

The Unveiling is Here!

We have been one of the chosen teams to participate in the 2012 Red Bull Soap Box Race here in Atlanta and tonight is the night of the unveiling of all the teams soap box car sketches. A couple members of the FIT Radio team are going to see who we are up against and scoping out the competition. It should definitely be interesting! Check out these videos from previous Red Bull Soap Box Race events to get an idea of what we’re planning on seeing a mere glimpse of tonight…

And here are some pretty gnarly crashes we’re somewhat looking forward to as well…

Our FIT Radio Office Runs on Red Bull, Daily.

FIT Radio recently partnered up with Red Bull to help host and promote the Red Bull Thre3Style Event: A World Renowned DJ Competition (Crossing Every Ocean!).

Let me start off by saying, here at FIT Radio, we are avid Red Bull drinkers (by this, I mean we have CASES of Red Bull in our office at any given moment). No lie. So, of course, we all wanted to start flying around the office when we heard the news that we were partnering up with Red Bull. Not only were we excited to work with Red Bull, but we were also pumped to have a number of our own DJs be invited to compete in the competition.

As our DJs got ready for their 15 minutes under the spotlight, our Marketing Team got buzzing. On the night of the event, 1,870 people came out to participate in the “dance floor mayhem” this event promised to produce. I can assure you, this promise did not fall short. The dance floor was packed; all you could see was a sea of people from the stage to the wall.

It was a night full of energy (We can thank the “Red Bull Perfect Pour” for that!) and, yes, mayhem. The crowd went nuts when they heard a song they loved, and they all joined in to cheer on and support their favorite DJs. All in all, it was a night to remember – especially for the DJs who participated. They all rocked it out! And, I am happy to point out, a number of our FIT Radio DJs placed in the competition!

Placed: 1st) DJ Jelly,  2nd) DJ KO, and  3rd) DJ Chris Rimby.Great job guys!

FIT Radio has put together a Red Bull Thre3Style Station playing mixes from DJs who competed in the event. Check it out, and, of course, tell your friends!

DJ Jelly will go on to Vegas to compete in the National Final. The winner from National will then go on to compete in the Final Competition against 9 other countries in Vancouver, Canada in December. Good Luck Jelly; Atlanta will be rooting for you!

SEE THE EVENT!

Some Insider Information: Working with Red Bull. We cannot say enough wonderful things about the experience we had in working with Red Bull and our Red Bull Event Marketing Manager, Michael Vaughn. Everything ran seamlessly from the very beginning, and you could tell it was not Michael’s “first rodeo”. The event turned out to be a complete success. We look forward to working with the professionals at Red Bull again in the future.
