Red Bull Soapbox Race

This past Saturday was a milestone for the FIT Radio team to say the least. Not only was it our first time attending the Red Bull Soapbox Race but also our first time competing.

vs.

Clearly from day one we knew that we were a bunch of amateur misfits in a sea of professional enthusiasts but we didn’t let that slow us down. The amount of dedication and time and effort that these teams sacrificed is nothing short of incredible and we knew it was going to take some serious man power to get us up to speed with the R.B.S.B. (Red Bull Soapbox) veterans. With only two more days before the race, hurdle after hurdle, deadline crunch after deadline crunch we found ourselves among the chosen teams to be featured in the Atlanta Journal Constitution!

There is just something about being featured in your hometown’s news paper that fills you with a certain kind of pride (insert blissful moment of silence with weird cheesy smile included.) Anyway back to reality, when Friday came (day before the race) there was no looking back especially since Lexi and I had to push Rusty from Opera Nightclub to Piedmont Park and we literally couldn’t look back because we had to make sure we didn’t push the President of FIT Radio into on coming traffic . No worries, we found time for a photo opp!

After what seemed like an hour we made it to our destination and dropped off our “little” baby into the trusty hands of the Red Bull officials. I could tell it was going to be hard getting any sleep that night. Picture yourself waking up in a panic thinking you’re an hour late for a huge meeting every hour on the hour…yeah not the best nights sleep I’d ever had. Anyway, we got to our pit and this is what one of our competitors looked like:

Yeah, giant Christian Louboutin pumps. Our craft might have not had as much paper mache detail as the others but our sound system made up for it

Around 11:45 am the teams began to get in line to make their way down the course (which didn’t seem as intimidating as we thought unfortunately). While Rusty and the rest of the skit members waited anxiously in line, Lexi and I tried to find a good post to see all the action. Easier said than done. The park was packed and not only was it hot and muggy outside but the amount of people there made me have flashbacks of Music Midtown and getting stuck to sweaty people who couldn’t navigate a crowd if their life depended on it! Sorry, clearly I’m still a little bent out of shape about it. No worries though,we found an awesome spot and were able to see the skit and watch it all on the big screen behind the stage. If my memory serves me correctly the judges gave us some pretty solid scores. We received a 10, 9, 8, 10, 9, 10, 8. But there is a very good chance I could be wrong.

After our car’s run down the hill, we frantically fought our  way through the crowd to meet up with everyone. In case you aren’t aware of the rules, there is absolutely no consumption of alcohol before the race by any of the team members, so you can imagine our excitement when we reached Park Tavern.

After we had a few, okay many celebratory cocktails somebody remembered that we had to retrieve the FIT Radio Soapbox car and take it home, aka all the way back to Rusty’s place near Crescent Avenue (barf). Luckily for me, I couldn’t help push because somebody had to document everything via camera phone!

Getting To Know Your Favorite FIT Radio DJs: DJ HOHME

Getting to know your favorite FIT Radio DJs…

FIT Radio flew DJ HOHME down to Atlanta back in July to spin at one of the Top 3 Nightclubs in the Country, Opera Nightclub. We had such a good time and enjoyed his set so much we just had to bring him back! He’ll be back in “The A” this weekend and we couldn’t be more pumped!  HOHME has great energy behind the decks, and he really knows how to make sure everyone on the dance floor is having a good time. Read our  interview we did with him; it’s sure to get you all pumped and excited to jam out to HOHME whether it be on the web or your app, or if you’re in town, at Opera Nightclub!

Back in July I received the opportunity to chat with HOHME and ask him a few questions. Here is what he had to say…

Where is your favorite place to spin?  Anywhere people go specifically to let go and dance.  I’d say my recent favorites have to be my sets at Burning Man back in early September, a private beach party in Rincon, Puerto Rico in October as well as my set at Opera Nightclub in Atlanta back in July.

Where are you from?  Originally, I’m from Southern Oregon, but I went to school and lived in LA for nearly 7 years.  Also, I lived in Beijing for about 6 months.

Where do you live now? I’m currently based in NYC, specifically the East Village.

How did you come up with the idea for your iPad DJ MixBoard App?  I was looking for a way to make my DJ efforts as mobile as possible, and having to bring/rely on turntables/cdjs at every event was not something I wanted to do…so I took all the main features I use the turntable for and designed them into the interface of the app.  Now I can control basically everything I ever did with a turntable wirelessly on my iPad.

What was the hardest part about launching the iPad app?  The hard part was designing it in a way that included everything i needed (gain, effects, loops, cues, pitch control). Other than that, considering it’s based on open-source framework off an existing app, I didn’t really have to worry about launching it at all (which is why I ended up giving it out for free download).

Where is your favorite place in the world?  Oh man, that’s hard to answer… If I had to give just one, I’d say Katmandu, Nepal. I spent a little over a month backpacking through Nepal and India back in 2008. Describing the first time I saw the himalayas in person as breathtaking wouldn’t do it justice whatsoever.  It was straight up moving.  Not to mention, nepal is probably the furthest I’ve been from western culture, which was refreshing.

Where does your fashion inspiration come from?  I’ve always liked fashion, but never considered myself fashionable really.  I’d say my inspiration comes from close friends; a lot of my friends have serious style and mine, I’d say, is just a runoff from what I liked that they were wearing here and there. Currently I love basic, non-branded clothing with minimal but tactful details.

What is the craziest thing you have ever done?  …depends what your definition of crazy is.  Most recently, I’d say Burning Man takes the ticket.  There’s no way to fully describe what it’s like on the playa, but it was the best/craziest week of my life…  just an insane time.

What is your favorite thing about being a DJ?  I get to play the music I love for a living.

What is your favorite track at this moment in time?  I’m working on a bootleg of Morgan Page’s “Fight For You” right now with a producer partner of mine named Odmark, out of DC.  It’s sounding awesome!

What type of equipment do you use?  Macbook running Serato, Rane TTM 57sl mixer, and iPad…producing on Logic Pro

How would you describe yourself in 3 words?  Happy, blessed, positive

What is something no one knows about you?  I was a double major in business & dance in college.  I’ve danced my whole life.

What do you do when you aren’t spinning? Listen to a TON of new music, sleep.

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?  Touring internationally, owning a record label, playing stadium crowds/festivals.

What are your thoughts on FIT Radio?  It’s the best, most user-friendly way to stream mixes on the app store.  Hands down.

Getting To Know Your Favorite FIT Radio DJs: DJ Ri

FIT Radio flew DJ Ri (pronounced rye) and Craig Smoove to Atlanta back in December to spin at one of the Top 3 Nightclubs in the country, Opera Nightclub. A little bit during and after their set, FIT Radio’s Music Director, Chris Rimby, had a chance to hang out with them and said they were pretty cool dudes… we couldn’t agree more! With so much going on like iClub blowing up and a never ending schedule of events to spin, DJ Ri doesn’t let it all get to his head. He is your typical California boy who enjoys kickin’ it at the pier or surfing some waves. And after the interview we found he’s got a bit of an adventurous side to him as well!

Before his set,  we took him out to dinner for a little pre-gaming. During dinner and while he was down here, we all got to know him a bit. We were quickly blown away by how humble and courteous he was… must be those North Western roots! During his set, the FIT Radio Team and I partied in an Opera Box; We had a blast! HOHME has great energy behind the decks, and he really knows how to make sure everyone on the dance floor is having a good time.
